Named after the Duke of York (later James II), this room was the Dukes’ bedroom over a ten year period when he was high admiral of the English Navy during the Anglo Dutch war (1665-1674), The fact that royalty stayed here is demonstrated by the fabulous pargetted plasterwork ceiling that exists to this day.
THE ROOM
The ceiling dominates the room, and has the Stuart Fleur de Lys, the rose of the Earl of Sandwich and a seahorse to signify the naval connection within the decoration. White linen, fabrics from Zoffany and The Designers Guild, and design classics such as a Le Corbuisier Chaise Longue contrast with the original fireplace, a medieval window (the only original window left in the house) and the ceiling to create a sumptuos, contempory bedroom in a beautiful historical setting. Guests staying in this room can wake up and have the same morning view as a previous King of England and Scotland from 350 years ago.
